Study Shows 97 Percent Breast Cancer Survivors Would Sacrifice Breast Health Again to Avoid Cancer

Breast cancer affects about one in eight U.S. women, according to the National Cancer Institute. Nearly 90 percent will survive five years or more.

Previous research found that women who had undergone prophylactic double mastectomy were satisfied with their decision soon after the surgery.

A new research shows that those who were comfortable with that decision still are many years after. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., questioned hundreds of women who sacrificed a healthy breast in the hope of avoiding another cancer. Twenty years after their surgery, 97 percent said they would make the same decision again.

With today's improved breast reconstruction techniques, women are likely "to be even happier with the results" than they were in decades past, noted Dr. Stephanie Bernik, chief of surgical oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, who is familiar with the findings.

Surgical treatments include lumpectomy (excision of the tumor and surrounding tissue), mastectomy (removal of the diseased breast) or double mastectomy (removal of both breasts). A prophylactic double mastectomy does not guarantee that the cancer will not recur.

Adjunct treatment may include radiation, chemotherapy or hormone therapy.

After another 10 years, the majority were surveyed once more. Complete results were available for 269 women.

In the initial survey, 86 percent said they were satisfied with their decision and 95 percent said they would repeat the procedure if they had to again. In the 20-year follow-up, 90 percent expressed satisfaction with their decision and 97 percent said they would repeat it.

However, about 30 percent in both time periods said they had suffered from negative body image, and nearly a quarter said their sense of femininity and sexual relationships were affected. Those effects did not increase with time, the results showed.

Experts say the prospects for women who undergo mastectomy today are much improved from 20 years ago. "We have procedures now that they didn't even have when the women in this study had their surgeries," Bernik said.

For instance, breast reconstruction now often accompanies the cancer surgery. The important thing is for women to come to terms with the decision, said Bernik.

"We don't push it [double mastectomy]," she said. Often, a young woman will have children, nurse them, and then decide to have the second breast removed, she noted.

According to Bernik, about 10 percent of breast cancers are caused by genetic mutations, and women who have family members already diagnosed with breast cancer are at higher risk if the cancer is genetically influenced.

Other risk factors for breast cancer are age or long exposure to estrogen, which occurs when menstruation begins at an early age and continues past 50, said Boughey. Women who give birth to a first child later in life are also at higher risk, she noted. Men can also develop breast cancer, but it is uncommon.

Breast cancer patients are doing better these days than even five or 10 years ago, said Boughey.

Breast Cancer Awareness Conference Keynote Speaker Hueina Su Connects Negative Thoughts with Emotional Stress on the Body

Breast Cancer Awareness Conference keynote speaker and life coach Hueina Su
demonstrates the connection between negative thoughts and weak body strength.

Breast Cancer Awareness Conference speaker and life coach Hueina Su keynotes to breast cancer survivors on connection of negative thoughts and emotions with stress on the body.

DENVILLE, NJApril 24, 2011 – Physical and emotional stress can wreck havoc in breast cancer patients’ immune function and healing process when coping with cancer diagnosis and treatment. Negative thoughts and emotions can be further complicated by fears, anxiety, grief and stress.

In a keynote address at a breast cancer awareness conference, motivational speaker and life coach Hueina Su helps one hundred breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers connect their negative thoughts and emotions with stress on their body.

Hueina Su, MS, BSN, CEC, is an inspirational keynote speaker, best-selling author, mindful wellness expert, certified life coach, and the president of Beyond Horizon Coaching based in Denville, New Jersey.

“An average person has over 60,000 thoughts a day or one thought a second. Ninety-five percent of the thoughts are repeated from yesterday. Eighty percent of the repeated thoughts are negative,” Su said. “It’s important to recognize the fact that our thoughts affect our actions or inactions and perceived reality at a very deep subconscious level.”

Su demonstrated how negative thoughts affect a person’s strength using so-called muscle testing. It’s a method of applied kinesiology. “When you’re thinking positive thoughts, you are strong and able to resist externally applied force. Conversely, if you’re thinking negative thoughts, your strength starts to decrease,” Su said. “That’s a huge impact in your strength just by a change of thought. It’s a mind-over-matter, thought-over-body kind of phenomenon.”

“There are other forces that affect your level of stress. These invisible forces are the root causes of physical and emotional stress that I call “the invisible chaos.” They are invisible like electricity, but you can experience their effects. You have to learn how to tame your invisible chaos. Otherwise, you won’t have long-lasting stress relief,” Su said.

“Your thoughts are very powerful. Your thoughts turn into actions. Your actions become results. Your results are your reality. So mind your own thoughts,” Su said.

Since June 2010, Su has been leading a Mindful Wellness Coaching and Stress Management Program at Sparta Cancer Center in Sparta, New Jersey. Over 80 cancer patients and caregivers have participated and benefited from Su’s stress relief coaching program.

“The well-being of cancer caregivers and patient care staff is just as important as that of cancer patients. Having worked with cancer and other terminally ill patients as a registered nurse, I experienced first-hand the high level of stress and its negative impact on physical health and emotional well-being. This is why I wrote my best-selling book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others,” Su said.

Breast Cancer Coach Hueina Su Keynotes on Taming Invisible Chaos and Relieving Emotional Stress for Cancer Survivors

Hueina Su, MS, BSN, CEC
Inspirational Keynote Speaker, Certified Life Coach
Mindful Wellness and Stress Relief Expert

Mindful wellness expert, inspirational speaker and life coach Hueina Su was the keynote speaker addressing the invisible chaos and root causes of stress to breast cancer patients and survivors at a breast cancer conference.

DENVILLE, NJ – April 16, 2011 – Coping with the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer is a very stressful journey for cancer patients and survivors, complicated by fears, anxiety, grief, and many emotional issues. Physical and emotional stress can wreck havoc in cancer patients’ immune function and healing process. Learning how to cope with stress effectively is critical for their recovery and emotional well-being.

In a keynote address at a breast cancer survivorship conference, inspirational speaker and life coach Hueina Su helps one hundred breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers identify their invisible chaos and root causes of stress and offers coping strategies to remain calm, peaceful and confident.

Hueina Su, MS, BSN, CEC, is an inspirational keynote speaker, best-selling author, mindful wellness expert, certified life coach, and the president of Beyond Horizon Coaching based in Denville, New Jersey.

“Most conventional stress management techniques are important and beneficial, but they often provide temporary relief for the symptoms of stress, not the root cause of the stress,” Su says. “For example, yoga, massage, meditation are feel-good techniques. But stress will come back within an hour or two if the root cause of stress isn’t addressed.”

Su adds that this is why conventional stress management alone does not work. There are other forces that affect your level of stress, and in many cases, these invisible forces are the root cause of your stress. “I call these forces the invisible chaos. They are invisible like electricity, but you can experience their effects. You have to learn how to tame your invisible chaos. Otherwise, you won’t have long-lasting stress relief,” Su says.

Su pointed out eight common invisible chaos causing emotional and physical stress:

  1. I’m not good enough
  2. I’m not worthy
  3. Chronic people-pleasing
  4. Perfectionism
  5. Four fears, of success, failure, judgment, rejection
  6. Constantly comparing yourself
  7. Ghosts from the past
  8. Self-limiting beliefs

Breast Cancer Coach Helps Cancer Patients Reduce Stress, Find New Hope and Self Confidence

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death. Coping with diagnosis and treatment of cancer is a very stressful journey for cancer patients and survivors, complicated by fears, anxiety, grief, and many emotional issues.

Certified life coach and stress management expert Hueina Su, MS, BSN, CEC, has launched a pioneering Mindful Wellness Coaching Program at the Sparta Cancer Center in Sparta, New Jersey. Since June 2010, over 60 cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers have benefited from the service with positive feedback. Su is the president and founder of Denville, NJ–based Beyond Horizon Coaching.

“Cancer patients and caregivers are very prone to stress and overwhelm. Research has shown that stress reduces immune function and interferes with the body’s ability to heal, so learning how to deal with stress effectively will help accelerate cancer patients’ recovery and improve their quality of life. Stress reduction and coaching have been found to improve cancer patients’ survival rates,” Su said.

The Mindful Wellness Program is an innovative multi-dimensional program to enhance care and quality of life for cancer patients, caregivers, and staff. “Stress reduction coaching can lower patients’ risks of cancer recurrences, infection, complications, and stress-related illnesses. It can promote healing and make medical treatment more effective,” Su said.

“By giving cancer patients tools and techniques for stress relief, self-care, and life skills, they receive a sense of control, and become more resilient and confident in dealing with cancer and other life changes,” Su said. “One example is a cancer survivor who also lost her job in the process and experienced financial difficulty due to recent economic downturn. Through my coaching, she’s able to use the skills to deal with her family, reframe the problem, and come up with solutions.”

Sparta Cancer Center is the first radiation oncology center in the Sussex County NJ to offer the most advanced radiation therapy. Under the leadership of Dr. Michael Gallagher, MD, MBA, FACRO, FACP, the center has a multidisciplinary team that offers complementary support programs in addition to radiation and chemotherapy. Su’s Mindful Wellness Coaching Program is the newest addition to their complementary programs.

Su said, “I have also learned life lessons from the cancer patients I’m coaching. An 83-year-old cancer patient showed me that there is always hope in life. I’m so impressed by her strong will and optimism.

“The well-being of cancer caregivers and patient care staff is just as important as that of cancer patients. Having worked with terminally ill cancer patients as a nurse, I experienced first-hand the high level of stress and its negative impact on health and well-being. This is why I wrote my best-selling book Intensive Care for the Nurturer’s Soul: 7 Keys to Nurture Yourself While Caring for Others,” Su says.

“It’s my pleasure to work with Dr. Gallagher and his team,” Su said. “My program gives them the tools and confidence to not just survive, but to also thrive after their cancer treatments. There is life beyond cancer, and I feel so privileged to be able to help them bridge that transition.
